Valmet PIK-23 Towmaster

The Valmet PIK-23 Towmaster was a trainer aircraft from the Finnish manufacturer Valmet , which was made entirely of composite materials .

History and construction

Polyteknikkojen ilmailukerho , an association of Finnish engineering students with long experience in aircraft development, proposed in the 1970s to develop a new aircraft for glider tow. Work initially focused on improving an earlier design, the PIK-19 Muhinu . Later, Helsinki University of Technology and Valmet took over the project and started developing again. The goal was to develop an aircraft that could be used as a training aircraft in addition to towing gliders. It was named PIK-23 Towmaster . The aircraft was designed as a single-engine low-wing aircraft with a non-retractable nose wheel landing gear and two seats next to each other. Only two aircraft were built, one by Valmet, the other at the university in the PIK workshop. The OH-TUG's maiden flight took place on March 22, 1982. The second aircraft took off for the first time the following year. Although Valmet intensively marketed the aircraft, no orders were placed. It was even considered to sell the aircraft as a kit for amateur aircraft builders.
