History and construction
The PIK-11 Tumppu was a single-seat, single-engine sport aircraft, which was designed as a cantilever low-wing aircraft with a closed cockpit and fixed tail wheel landing gear. It was the first powered airplane designed and manufactured by Polyteknikkojen Ilmailukerho. The goal was to develop a cheap to build and easy to fly airplane for aviation clubs.
Work on the project started in 1948 by Kai Mellen and Ilkka Lounanmaa under the direction of Professor Arvo Ylinen. The first flight took place on March 15, 1953. The prototype still exists and is on display in the Finnish Aviation Museum. One copy was registered in the Finnish Aviation Register in 2008.
Vaasan Lentokerho ry.- Vasa Flygklubb rf has been working for several years. on a replica of the PIK-11, which is to be powered by a Rotax 912 .
