Life

As the Frankfurt cultural department head Hilmar Hoffmann recalled in his laudation on Jürgen Thorer's 60th birthday, Thorer's interests went beyond his profession. It was also a childhood dream to become a musician. His talent for this was certified by a prize for his own compositions in 1943. He also received a price for model aircraft. While still a prisoner of war, he studied chemistry and passed his interpreting exam "with flying colors". Thorer was married and had several children.

He completed his training in London. In 1950 he became co-owner of the companies Thorer & Hollender and Thorer & Co. Since 1951 he was personally liable partner of Thorer OHG and since 1965 director of Belfast (Northern Ireland) based Thorer (UK) Limited . In the 1960s the company expanded and fur cleaning companies ( Thorer-Cleaning ) were set up in Berlin, Hamburg, Velbert in the Rhineland and Oberpframmern near Munich. In 1967 a branch was established in Sulzbach and in 1978 a branch in Mühlheim was taken over. Due to the crisis in the fur processing industry, Thorer & Co. GmbH, which last had 150 employees, had to close in 1994. The machine park was exported to Dispilio, Greece, a small town near the old furrier town of Kastoria .

He was chairman of the supervisory board of the Frankfurt fur fair and president of the "International Fur Trade Federation", which became a member of the IUCN at his instigation . Thorer published specialist articles and books on the international Persian trade and company history.
