history

design

Frankfurter Adler by Hans Leistikow, 1924

In 1911 the city of Frankfurt am Main donated three silver and three bronze plaques of honor, designed by the sculptor Alexander Kraumann . They measured 70 × 55 millimeters and were embossed on the front with "Honorary gift of the city of Frankfurt am Main", including the crowned head of the Frankfurt city eagle. On the back there was a figure of a woman with a branch and a laurel wreath and a toddler.

In 1929 the sculptor Benno Elkan created a new plaque of honor, which was executed in bronze. It showed a city silhouette dominated by towers on the front and the inscription “Thanks to the City of Frankfurt” on the back. The first plaque was awarded at the same time, but the new one as the highest award.

In 1936 the sculptor Ludwig Mergangn designed a new plaque of honor, which was to serve as the highest honor from 1937. Finally, in 1952, Richard Scheibe created a new plaque made of bronze. All previous badges were no longer awarded by resolution no. 1102 of September 15, 1952. The front of the plaque showed the Francofurtia , a woman who wore a shield with the Frankfurt city arms in her left hand and a small branch in her right hand, as well as the inscription “Ehrenplakette der Stadt Frankfurt am Main” on the left and right. The Roman is shown on the back .

In 1976 the plaque of honor was redesigned. The honor plaque, which has been in effect since then, shows the uncrowned Frankfurt city eagle based on a design by Hans Leistikow from 1924.

Award

The city did not always adhere to the city council's decision to only award the honor plaque to five people a year from 1972 onwards, following an almost inflationary awarding practice; there were already more award winners in 1980 and 1981.

The previous practice of honoring full-time members of the magistrate, mayors and lord mayors has now largely been abandoned, as they are elected and paid to do something positive for the city. Honorary members and other citizens, on the other hand, should primarily benefit from the honor plaque as an award for their commitment to the city.

In addition to the large plaque and an award certificate, the Leistikow city eagle has also been awarded since 1991 as a miniature plaque that can be attached to a woman's blouse or lapel.
