Georg Draheim (born October 11, 1903 in Berlin , † August 24, 1972 in Stuttgart ) was a German bank manager, president of the Deutsche Genossenschaftskasse and professor of economics .

biography

Draheim dedicated his entire professional life to the German cooperatives. He is regarded as the most important top representative and reformer of the German credit unions of the 20th century. In 1922 he began an apprenticeship in banking at the Prussian Central Cooperative Bank in Berlin. After his studies, which he completed with a doctorate at the Berlin Business School in 1929, he returned to work at the top cooperative institute, which is now known as the Deutsche Zentralgenossenschaftskasse . Two years later he became their general representative.

Draheim became a member of the NSDAP in 1937 . In 1939 he joined the executive committee of the Deutsche Zentralgenossenschaftskasse as director and board representative. In the same year he accepted a teaching position at the Berlin Business School and at the Technical University of Hanover. In 1952 he was appointed honorary professor in Hanover. Honorary professorships were later added at the Universities of Göttingen and Marburg . As a banking practitioner and an economic theorist, Draheim was of the opinion that cooperatives, especially credit unions, can only survive in competition if they join together to form larger local units. He also believed that complex cooperative structures should be simplified. His ideas have become a model, especially in the credit union sector.

In 1945 Draheim planned and directed the adventurous evacuation of parts of the Deutsche Zentralgenossenschaftskasse to Gotha and later to Marburg. When it became clear that the American occupation authorities would not recognize the top cooperative institute, Draheim fled to the British occupation zone. In 1948 he became a member of the board of the Landesgenossenschaftsbank Hannover. In 1964 he became President of the Deutsche Genossenschaftskasse , the central institute of German cooperatives, especially the Volksbanks and Raiffeisenbanks. In 1968 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . He received another award from the Federal Republic of Germany with the award of the Great Cross of Merit with a Star .
