Georg Kurt Schauer (born August 2, 1899 in Frankfurt am Main , † December 11, 1984 in Bad Homburg in front of the height ) was a German publisher and book historian .

Life path

Georg Kurt Schauer studied history in Frankfurt / Main and Freiburg im Breisgau by 1922 and received his doctorate in 1923 on the subject of the individual and the community. From the business procedure of the Frankfurt Parliament . He then trained as a publisher and bookseller , worked as a research assistant at the University of Marburg and worked for various publishers, including Rütten & Loening and Goldmann Verlag .

In 1939 Schauer worked on the preparation of the Gutenberg Reichsausstellung in 1940 on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the invention of the printing press, which did not take place because of the outbreak of the Second World War . Because of his wife's Jewish origins, he stayed in Brno from 1941 to 1943 , was drafted as a soldier in 1944 and seriously wounded.

In 1945 Georg Kurt Schauer was commissioned by the US military government to organize a branch of the German Booksellers Association in Wiesbaden and received a license for the West German edition of the Börsenblatt for the German book trade . His initiative resulted in the Börsenverein in Frankfurt with a new federal structure. Together with Hanns Wilhelm Eppelsheimer , Schauer founded the German National Library in Frankfurt as a counterpart to the one in Leipzig. At the same time he worked on setting up the Frankfurt branch of the Suhrkamp Verlag .

From 1948, Schauer devoted himself to his own small publishing house, which existed until 1972. Among other things, the publisher published books on book art . He also worked as a consultant for type manufacturers such as D. Stempel , Gebr. Klingspor and Linotype , became managing director of the competition The most beautiful German books and set up the book art collection in the national library, which was transferred to the Book Art Foundation in 1965 .

Honors

In 1964 Georg Kurt Schauer was awarded the plaque of honor by the German Publishers and Booksellers Association and in 1971 was appointed honorary professor for the history of book design and book art at the Technical University of Darmstadt . In 1981 he received the plaque of honor from the city of Frankfurt am Main .
