Klingspor Brothers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gebr. Klingspor was a type foundry in Offenbach am Main , which was run by the businessman Karl Klingspor and his brother Wilhelm Klingspor . Along with H. Berthold AG , the Bauersche Gießerei and D. Stempel AG, it was one of the most important German font manufacturers of the 20th century.

Companies

The company emerged from the takeover of the Rudhard'sche foundry by Carl Klingspor in 1892. This was founded in 1842 by Philipp Rudhard, Johann Peter Nees and Michael Huck. Klingspor's sons Karl and Wilhelm managed the foundry, which was renamed Gebr. Klingspor in 1904 (other sources 1906). In 1907 the company was one of the twelve companies that helped found the Deutscher Werkbund .

Karl Klingspor had fonts designed by well-known artists and designers such as Peter Behrens , Otto Eckmann , Otto Hupp , Rudolf Koch , Gerhard Munthe and Walter Tiemann and supplied print shops worldwide.

Klingspor Museum

From 1917, D. Stempel AG took a share in the company. Since 1925, in addition to lead casting, wooden fonts and type boxes and shelves have been produced and a chemical-graphic institute has been set up. The type artist Wilhelm Klingspor died in the same year. The company was destroyed in bombing raids in 1944 and numerous templates were destroyed. In 1950 Karl Klingspor died and his nephew Karl Hermann took over the management of the company. Fonts were discontinued in 1956 and some of the fonts were adopted by D. Stempel. Until the bankruptcy in 1984, the company still worked as a graphic art institute. The artistic rights to the typefaces that were transferred to the company Stempel are now owned by the Linotype company in Bad Homburg, which took over the company Stempel in 1985.

museum

The library from Karl Klingspor's estate formed the basis for the foundation of the Klingspor Museum in Offenbach am Main in 1953.
