Karl Klingspor (born June 25, 1868 in Gießen ; † January 1, 1950 in Kronberg im Taunus ) was a German type designer and typographer .

life and work

Karl Klingspor and his brother Wilhelm took over the Rudhard foundry in Offenbach am Main, which their father Carl Klingspor had acquired. In 1906 the company was renamed Gebr. Klingspor . In 1907 she was a co-founder of the Deutscher Werkbund and was a member there until unification was banned by the National Socialists in 1934. The company was acquired in 1956 by Stempel, Frankfurt / Main, which in turn was taken over in 1985 by Linotype in Bad Homburg has been.

Karl Klingspor was the first owner of a type foundry who systematically enlisted artists to design print types. Artists such as Otto Eckmann , Peter Behrens , Otto Hupp , Rudolf Koch , Max Dorn and Walter Tiemann worked for his company . From 1899 Klingspor was a member of the Society of Bibliophiles , in 1922 he was a co-founder of the Frankfurt Bibliophile Society. In 1948 he was made an honorary citizen of Offenbach am Main . He is buried in the old cemetery in Offenbach .

Klingspor's private collection forms the basis of the Klingspor Museum for Type Art and Typography in Offenbach.
