Initially, the product name “Linotype” referred to the typesetting machine developed by Ottmar Mergenthaler and first presented in 1886. In 1890 the product name "Linotype" appeared for the first time as part of the new company name Mergenthaler Linotype Company , based in Brooklyn New York . The origin of this company was the Mergenthaler Printing Co. , with which several American newspaper publishers financed Mergenthaler's work. The purpose of the company, established in 1890, was the production and sale of Linotype typesetting machines; this also included the Linotype type matrices.

At the end of the 19th century, Linotype & Machinery Ltd. was founded. , Manchester , England, and Mergenthaler Setzmaschinen-Fabrik GmbH in Berlin , Germany. Linotype typesetting machines and type matrices were manufactured in both countries; Both companies were financially connected to the American Mergenthaler Linotype Company . After 1945 the Linotype activities in Germany were continued under the company Linotype GmbH (based in Frankfurt am Main ).

Traditional type foundries such as D. Stempel AG , Haas'sche Schriftgiesserei and Deberny & Peignot have merged into the Linotype company over the years.

In 1987 the American, English and German Linotype companies were merged to form Linotype AG , headquartered in Eschborn near Frankfurt am Main. In 1990 Linotype AG merged with the Kiel company Dr.-Ing. Rudolf Hell GmbH to Linotype-Hell AG in Eschborn. At that time, the group had around 5,250 employees worldwide.

In 1997, Linotype-Hell AG was taken over by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG . The core business of the previous Linotype-Hell AG was transferred to the prepress area of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG. Only the newly founded Linotype Library GmbH continued to use "Linotype" as part of the company. This independent line of business took over the font and typography division of the former Linotype-Hell AG. Linotype Library GmbH was headquartered in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe , Germany.

At the end of 2005, Linotype Library GmbH changed its company name to Linotype GmbH .

Linotype GmbH has been part of Monotype Imaging Inc .; a company that continues the name of the former Monotype typesetting system after previous mergers . The previous Linotype GmbH has been operating as Monotype GmbH in Germany since March 2013.
