Karlgeorg Hoefer
Karlgeorg Hoefer (born February 6, 1914 in Schlesisch-Drehnow (today: Drzonów ), † October 8, 2000 in Offenbach am Main ) was a German typographer , type designer and calligrapher .
Live and act
Hoefer taught, among other things, at the Hochschule für Gestaltung (Werkkunstschule until 1970) in Offenbach am Main . He then held teaching positions to direct summer schools in California and other American cities. In 1987 he founded the writing workshop Klingspor Offenbach and the Förderkreis Internationaler Kalligraphie e. V.
He designed fonts for Ludwig & Mayer , Gebr. Klingspor , Linotype , D. Stempel AG , H. Berthold AG and JT Hellas , e.g. B. Salto (1952 for Gebr. Klingspor) or its most widely used font, the FE font for the Federal Highway Research Institute .
His first digital typeface was the “Greek Program Grotesque” font for JT Hellas , which was also used in the “Digiset” digital typesetting machine from Dr. Ing. Hell and was the font for Greek telephone books for decades.
The Sho typeface designed by Hoefer (1992 for Linotype) was also used by the internationally known music duo The Chemical Brothers for their logo. Linotype holds the rights to the font .
Works by Karlgeorg and his wife Maria Hoefer (née Rein) can be found in the “Karlgeorg and Maria Hoefer Archive” of the Klingspor writing workshop in Offenbach-Rumpenheim, which was opened on February 8, 2009 .
