Ludwig & Mayer

Ludwig & Mayer was a type foundry in Frankfurt am Main .

The company was founded in 1875 as the CJ Ludwig type foundry by Jean Noel Carl Ludwig in Eckenheimer Landstrasse . Ludwig had previously worked for the Flinsch type foundry as an accountant for ten years. After Ludwig Mayer joined as a partner in 1883, the company traded as Ludwig & Mayer. In 1911 the company moved to Hanauer Landstrasse 187/189. The factory was destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt in the post-war years. In the 1950s the company was again one of the leading font manufacturers in Germany and cooperated with the Italian manufacturer Simoncini.

Well-known font designers who worked for Ludwig & Mayer included Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke , Jakob Erbar , Karlgeorg Hoefer , Walter Höhnisch and Ilse Schüle .

The company was closed in 1984/85. The font manufacturer Neufville in Barcelona took over the rights to the popular fonts .
