Ilse Schüle (born June 17, 1903 in Vaihingen an der Enz , † December 4, 1997 in Schwäbisch Hall ; born Bentel ) was a type cutter and typographer .

Life

Born as the fourth of six children of the city school, Bentel von Vaihingen, Ilse Schüle was devoted to the fine arts from an early age. She made numerous watercolors of her own free will and later had her talent further trained at the Stuttgart School of Applied Arts - moving from " breadless art " to serious "font design and commercial graphics". She studied with Friedrich Hermann Ernst Schneidler (1882–1956) and became his assistant and lecturer at the same school. After her marriage in 1929 and the birth of her twins in 1930, she continued her graphic work as a freelance artist, primarily designing many book covers for the Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt Stuttgart. Her work received high recognition at home and abroad.

The Rhapsodie font was created for the Ludwig & Mayer type foundry in Frankfurt am Main ; First cast in lead type 1951. The font classification DIN 16518 assigns them to the group of broken fonts and subgroup Xe of the fracture variants .

Regarding the form of the Rhapsodie font : In addition to the strict and solemn textured fonts , there were also cursive fonts for Gothic fonts, whose late forms are assigned the name Bastarda . These typefaces had a major influence on the Schwabach and, above all, the pointed German Kurrent script; Bastarda was also adopted as a print script . However, it died out in the 16th century. It was not until the 20th century that some type artists rediscovered certain decorative fonts. One of these successful examples is the Rhapsody , published in 1951 . The Rhapsody was relatively frequently lead typesetters used, and for example with the Salto of Karl Georg Hoefer comparable. Around 10% of the typesetting shops owned this typeface, which is still available in metal type today.

Before the war and during the war, the Schüle family had to change their place of residence several times in order to avoid political persecution and to gain a professional foothold.

So she got to know Brandenburg (west of Berlin), but was able to return to her Swabian homeland long before the end of the war. Ilse Schüle lived in Schwäbisch Hall since 1974, where she found her final resting place in 1997.
