Heinz Maria Oeftering
Heinz Maria Oeftering (born August 31, 1903 in Munich ; † May 18, 2004 in Frankfurt am Main ) was "First President" of the German Federal Railroad from 1957 to 1972 and, in 1957, briefly President of the Federal Audit Office .
Life
Oeftering, the son of a high school professor, studied law and specialized in finance and tax law. From 1932 to 1934 he was a councilor at the Reichsfinanzhof , then until 1943 senior councilor in the Reich Ministry of Finance . He was then drafted into the Wehrmacht , most recently as a non-commissioned officer .
In 1945 he became president of the audit office in Rhineland-Palatinate and from 1948 honorary professor in Mainz . 1950–1957 he was Ministerial Director in the Federal Ministry of Finance. From February 21 to May 12, 1957 he was President of the Federal Audit Office .
From 1957 until reaching the age limit in 1972 he was first president of the Deutsche Bundesbahn and until 1977 president of the board of directors of DB. In his first term of office, the number of employees fell from 537,000 to around 435,000 people, and sales rose from 6 to 11 billion DM. In May 1962, he was reappointed as First President for another five years. On May 5, 1967, he was reappointed in this capacity. The term of office began on May 13, 1967 and ended on May 12, 1972. During his term of office, a large part of the rail network was electrified and the Trans-Europ-Express and InterCity (1971) were introduced. During his tenure, the organizational structure was comprehensively changed; u. a. the number of Federal Railway Directorates was significantly reduced.
In 1959 and 1960 he was the first German President of the International Union of Railways (UIC). Around 1967 he was vice president of the association. At the end of 1970 he was appointed commander of the French Legion of Honor for his efforts to bring the European railways together . Oeftering was a member of numerous supervisory boards , including at Volkswagen . He was an honorary member of the Railway Fishing Club, Lübeck-Travemünde. Their ocean-going sport fishing boat was baptized in his name in his presence. In his private life he owned a model railway . He died at the age of 100.
