From 1991 he was First President of the Deutsche Bundesbahn , from September 1, 1991 also General Director of the Deutsche Reichsbahn . With the merger and organization under private law of the two railways in Deutsche Bahn AG as part of the rail reform , he became chairman of the board of the new company. Career

After attending a national political educational institution , he completed his Abitur at the Leibniz Gymnasium in Stuttgart and then began training as a steel construction fitter at DUEWAG in Krefeld . Until 1957 he studied mechanical engineering at the University of Stuttgart . Training and studies remained without a degree. This was followed by the management of the family business Otto Dürr as sole authorized signatory managing director until 1980.

Entrepreneurial achievements

In this capacity he converted Otto Dürr Industrie Anlagen GmbH into an internationally active Dürr Group . As a negotiator for the metal industry in tariff District Nordwürttemberg-Nordbaden he gained national prominence.

Redevelopment of AEG

In 1979 the company AEG-Telefunken AG recorded a record loss of 968 million DM. In January 1980 the supervisory board appointed the medium-sized company as chairman of the board. On August 9, 1982, Dürr filed a settlement . He then steered the company through the settlement from 1982 to 1984 with the support of attorney Wilhelm-Andreas Schaaf as settlement administrator and management board advisor Klaus Kuhn . In addition to numerous (emergency) company sales (ANT, Telefunken , T&N , Signalbau Huber and others) and restructuring, the implementation of a new management structure and the revitalization of the traditional brand AEG were the foundation of economic development. In 1985 he steered the company under the financially strong umbrella of Daimler-Benz AG , which was to develop from an automobile manufacturer into an integrated technology group. However, Dürr was also unable to bring the company into the profit zone during his tenure; until he switched to the Federal Railroad, it continued to record losses.

Conversion of the Bundesbahn and Reichsbahn to the Deutsche Bahn AG

From 1991 to May 31, 1992, Heinz Dürr was the first President of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, and on September 1, 1991, he was also General Director of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. From June 1, 1992, he was chairman of the joint management board of both railway companies and from January 1, 1994 to mid-1997, chairman of the management board of Deutsche Bahn AG. His appointment as Federal Railroad President was based on the recommendation of the management consultant Roland Berger . Dürr met with Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl and Federal Minister of Transport Friedrich Zimmermann in Berlin on the day of German unity , October 3, 1990, after the state act on reunification , to discuss the possible takeover of the post. He agreed with the words: "My country has done a lot for me, now I have to do something for my country." As part of the first stage of the railway reform , on January 1, 1994, during Dürr's term of office, the Federal and State Railways were transferred to Deutsche Bahn AG.

, In 1991, with commissioning of in his tenure ICE and the new lines between Hanover and Würzburg and Mannheim and Stuttgart of high-speed traffic added by rail in Germany. The introduction of the BahnCard in 1992 served both to increase customer loyalty and to harmonize the tariff systems of the Bundesbahn and Reichsbahn. The trend-setting company future campaign aimed at the privatization of the official railway, for which the legal framework was created when the railway reform was passed in 1994. Dürr initiated the Bahnhof 21 projects , which include Stuttgart 21 , Frankfurt 21 and Munich 21 , among others . The Have a Nice Weekend Ticket was also introduced during his tenure .

From July 1997 to February 1999 he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Bahn AG. The reason given for the immediate cessation of this activity on February 24, 1999 was given as differing views between him and the Federal Republic of Germany as the owner of Deutsche Bahn. Dieter H. Vogel succeeded him in the position of Chairman of the Supervisory Board.

From January 1st 1996 he was President of the Community of European Railways .
