Richard Lutz (born May 6, 1964 in Landstuhl ) is a German business economist and manager .

He has been a member of the Board of Management of Deutsche Bahn AG since April 2010 and its Chairman since March 2017.

Career

Previous career

Lutz comes from a family of railway workers. Lutz's father worked in a repair shop , his mother as a secretary for the railway. After graduating from high school at Sickingen , he began studying business administration at Saarbrücken University . From 1989 to 1994 he worked as a research assistant with Heinz Kußmaul at the chair for business administration, in particular financing and investment / business taxation at the University of Kaiserslautern . In 1998 he received his doctorate there with a thesis on the analysis of annual financial statements for unitary and group companies .

Deutsche Bahn

In 1994 Lutz started working for Deutsche Bahn AG and, after having worked in the areas of group controlling and planning, took over the management of the group controlling area in 2003, from then on reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer. After the long-standing CFO of DB AG Diethelm Sack resigned from his position on March 30, 2010, Lutz was appointed as his close confidante as his successor and, with effect from April 1, 2010, was appointed Chief Financial Officer of Deutsche Bahn AG and DB Mobility Logistics AG appointed. His contract, which ran until 2013, was extended to 2018 on June 20, 2012.

Around 2015 he was considered a possible successor to the then rail boss Rüdiger Grube , along with his then co-board members Volker Kefer , Berthold Huber and Ronald Pofalla . As of August 1, 2015, Lutz's area of responsibility also included the British bus and rail transport provider DB Arriva , which operates across Europe , the logistics service provider DB Schenker Logistics and the areas of procurement and IT.

With Grube's resignation on January 30, 2017, he initially took over his position as Chairman of the Management Board until the Supervisory Board appointed him Chairman of the Management Board for five years on March 22. After six weeks of unsuccessful search for a successor to Grube, Federal Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt decided to nominate Lutz as a candidate. According to a press report, Lutz did not necessarily want to take over the chairmanship.

On September 7, 2018, Lutz and the other board members wrote a letter that was later referred to as a “fire letter”. This letter was about the difficult situation of Deutsche Bahn, which had worsened in the previous months. The letter was addressed to the management of Deutsche Bahn. Lutz also announced major investment activities that need to be done and that the reforms will take a long time to complete.

With the resolution of the Supervisory Board on September 26, 2018, the finance department, which Lutz was previously responsible for, will be transferred to Alexander Doll on January 1, 2019 ; he was previously Head of Logistics at Deutsche Bahn and DB Cargo .

During a crisis meeting in early 2019 between Lutz and Federal Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU), as well as state secretaries, members of the coalition parties, rail infrastructure director Ronald Pofalla and CFO Alexander Doll, Lutz announced measures to improve punctuality and the eventual sale of the subsidiary Arriva , also the possible promotion of the bosses of group subsidiaries from passenger and freight traffic to the board of directors. Overall, Richard Lutz had to report to the Minister of Transport three times within two weeks at short notice in order to find solutions to the poor situation of Deutsche Bahn.

Over time, Lutz has earned the trust of the federal government as the owner.

At the end of 2019, there was a dispute over Alexander Doll's board positions , as a result of which the Federal Transport Minister and the Supervisory Board decided in favor of Lutz's whereabouts and the removal of Doll.

Private

Lutz is married and has three grown children. He plays chess in his spare time. As a tournament chess player he appeared in the 1980s, so he reached second place in the German youth championship in 1981, belonged to the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr and played with SC Miesenbach in the 2nd Bundesliga .

Lutz is considered diplomatic and not very emotional.
