Station 21

Various Deutsche Bahn AG projects, some of which have been dropped or postponed, to convert some stations in the 21st century are referred to as station 21 .

In the course of these projects, also referred to as projects 21 , railroad areas that are no longer required are to be made available to urban development and train traffic is to be accelerated. The urban areas used by the railway are to be reduced overall. In some cases, the conversion of terminal stations into through stations is also planned.

history

According to DB information, projects 21 are based on the idea of ​​making available areas of the modernized railroad for urban development. A planning dialogue between DB, the federal states and municipalities was designated as project 21 . According to a newspaper report, the architect Meinhard von Gerkan , inspired by Berlin Central Station , initiated the idea. According to DB's first internal estimates, around 25 cities with a total area of ​​around 1,600 hectares that will be freed up could be considered for 21 projects. Another report speaks of 17 cities that railway boss Heinz Dürr has envisaged for 21 projects.

In June 1996 the Frankfurt 21 and Munich 21 projects were presented. In 1996 the first plans were available for Frankfurt am Main, Munich, Saarbrücken and Mannheim, among others. The most advanced 21 project was Stuttgart 21 . There were specific plans for Neu-Ulm. There were also considerations for Nuremberg and Potsdam .

The German railway, introduced in October 1996 under the title Renaissance of railway stations in an exhibition parallel to the Architecture Biennale 1996 in Venice their considerations for stations of the future. This also included projects 21.

At the beginning of 1998 there were also specific plans in Mannheim, Magdeburg and Lindau. In mid-1998 planning studies were carried out for the cities of Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, Magdeburg, Mannheim, Munich, Neu-Ulm and Saarbrücken, among others.

It should be possible to sell 400 hectares of inner-city space nationwide as part of the project. According to Deutsche Bahn information from mid-1998, only projects should be pursued in which the public sector is at least as much involved as Deutsche Bahn.

For Deutsche Bahn, Stuttgart 21 was considered a pilot project for the other projects at the end of the 1990s.

The projects were put to the test in mid-1999. The projects in Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart were examined for their profitability. According to a newspaper report from 2007, of 17 nationally audited Bahnhof 21 projects, only Stuttgart 21 and Neu-Ulm 21 proved to be economically viable. The RheinMain plus project was then pursued in the Frankfurt area .

Current projects

  • Construction began in Stuttgart in February 2010, and completion of the Stuttgart 21 project is Template: future / in 4 yearsscheduled for the end of 2025 at the earliest .

  • At Lindau 21 , the terminal station on the island is to be replaced by a through station on the mainland as part of the electrification of the Allgäu Railway . This is intended to shorten travel times on the Munich – Zurich route and indirectly ensure better connections to the Gotthard base tunnel . After a long discussion about the preservation of the island station, a compromise solution was decided at the end of 2011. A small through station for long-distance traffic is to be built in Lindau-Reutin and the island station is to be retained in a smaller form. In a further vote in March 2012, the people of Lindau accepted the proposal for a new central train station in Reutin with a single-track island connection.

Postponed or stopped projects

  • The Frankfurt 21 and Munich 21 projects presented in mid-June 1996 envisaged the replacement of the terminus in Frankfurt am Main and Munich with an underground through station. The realization of the projects is not foreseeable. Since then, the RheinMain plus and the Frankfurt am Main long-distance railway tunnel have been pursued in the Frankfurt area .
  • In 2003, Deutsche Bahn AG withdrew from the Mannheim 21 project . Originally there were plans here to optimize the through station in order to increase the entry and exit speeds and to reduce the number of platform tracks. The city of Mannheim is now developing a new city quarter under the title Glückstein-Quartier on the south side of the main train station, for which former railway and industrial areas will be used.
