Meinhard von Gerkan

Meinhard von Gerkan (born January 3, 1935 in Riga , Latvia ) is a German architect . He is considered "the most famous German architect" and "one of the most influential architects in the world."

Meinhard von Gerkan comes from a German-Baltic family. The father died in 1942 as a soldier on the Eastern Front during World War II , the mother died shortly after fleeing Posen . Gerkan grew up as a foster child in Hamburg , since 1949 in a pastor's family. He attended a Waldorf school and graduated from an evening grammar school in 1955 ( evening school in front of the Holsten Gate ). First he studied law and physics in Hamburg, but then decided to study architecture in Berlin. He has six children from two marriages, Florence and Manon von Gerkan from his first marriage and four children from his second marriage to Sabine von Gerkan. He is related to the German-Baltic classical archaeologist and building researcher Armin von Gerkan .

In 1964 von Gerkan completed his studies in architecture at the Technical University of Braunschweig with a diploma. In the following year 1965 he founded his office partnership with Volkwin Marg , which still exists today under the name of "von Gerkan, Marg and Partner " (gmp) with headquarters in Hamburg. In the first two years of his career, von Gerkan and his partner won eight architecture competitions, including the one for the design of Berlin-Tegel Airport .

In 1974 von Gerkan accepted a professorship at the Technical University of Braunschweig, where he headed the Institute for Building Design (Department for Building Science and Design A) until 2002. The designs implemented by the gmp office in Germany and abroad include the Berlin-Tegel airport , the expansion of the Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel and Stuttgart airports, the new Berlin main train station (formerly Lehrter Bahnhof ) and the renovation of the Berlin Olympic Stadium . Since the turn of the millennium, the gmp office has also been intensively involved in planning in China . The planned town of Lingang New City was not only designed there, but has also been turned into reality since 2003.

Meinhard von Gerkan is a member of the Free Academy of the Arts Hamburg and president of the Academy for Architectural Culture, which he initiated together with his office partners . He lives on the Graswarder peninsula , where he bought one of the few houses in the 1960s. The model Manon von Gerkan is his daughter.
