Florence von Gerkan (* 1960 in Hamburg ) is a German costume designer and professor at the Berlin University of the Arts .

Life

Florence von Gerkan was born into a family of artistically ambitious scientists in Hamburg. Her father is the architect Meinhard von Gerkan ; she is related to Armin von Gerkan , professor of Greek and Roman architecture ; her sister Manon von Gerkan is an internationally known model and jewelry designer based in New York . Her father's ancestors were Baltic nobles .

Florence von Gerkan studied costume design with Professor Martin Rupprecht at the HdK Berlin .

Works

Her first job after graduation in 1988 brought her to the Thalia Theater in Hamburg as a house assistant for costume design . She later worked here for the performances of Uncle Wanja and Die Wildente with Jürgen Flimm (director) and Erich Wonder (set designer). She then worked at the Schaubühne Berlin with the director Andrea Breth on Hedda Gabler and Die Möwe . In 1996 she realized Die Fledermaus with Wilfried Minks in Düsseldorf .

Works like Alcina , Le nozze di Figaro , Don Giovanni , Così fan tutte , Haydn's L'Anima del Filosofo , Franz Schubert's Alfonso and Estrella , Giuseppe Verdi's La traviata and Offenbach's La Périchole follow at the Zurich Opera and the Vienna State Opera .

In 1996, the Italian director Cesare Lievi premiered Schlafes Bruder (by Willi) at the Zurich Opera . During this implementation, Florence von Gerkan met the Graubünden film and opera director Daniel Schmid . In 1996 they realized Linda di Chamounix and Il trovatore , which was still on the program in 2005, at the Zurich Opera House. Von Gerkan designed the costumes for Karol Szymanowski's King Roger at the Stuttgart State Theater . In 2000 she designed the costume design for Berg's Wozzeck at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano .

In 2000 there was also an engagement for the first time in the Bayreuth Festival Theater at the Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner under director Jürgen Flimm. In autumn 2000 the costume design for Fidelio at the New York Metropolitan Opera under conductor Christoph von Dohnányi followed .

With the German composer Heiner Goebbels , Florence von Gerkan premiered the piece Hashirigaki in 2000 at the Théâtre Vidy-Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland, and a world premiere in 2002 at the Grand Théâtre de Genève with the Ensemble Modern . At the same time she realized the world premiere of Die Riesen vom Steinfeld by Friedrich Cerhas and Peter Turrinis at the Vienna State Opera with Jürgen Flimm and Erich Wonder . She created the costumes for Handel's Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno 2002 at the Zurich Opera.

In 2004, Florence von Gerkan was responsible for the costume design for Siegfried and Walküre at the Ring des Nibelungen in Bayreuth, alongside director Jürgen Flimm and set designer Erich Wonder .

Florence von Gerkan has been a university professor for costume at the University of the Arts in Berlin, formerly HdK University of the Arts Berlin, since 2004 .
