Martin Rupprecht
Martin Rupprecht (born July 1, 1937 in Woldenberg (Neumark) ; † February 11, 2018 in Berlin ) was a German set designer , costume designer and freelance artist. He was a professor of stage costume at the Berlin University of the Arts .
Life
Rupprecht completed his studies in the departments of stage design and costume at the master school for arts and crafts in Berlin with Werner Kleinschmidt and Mariane Hertzing. After his time as assistant to Ita Maximowna , international theater work with a focus on music theater , world premieres and German premieres of new music took him to the major stages in Germany (Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Dresden), Europe (including Oslo, Stockholm, Basel, Zurich, Lisbon, Barcelona, Paris, Athens, Moscow, St. Petersburg) and beyond (Charleston - USA, Los Angeles, Miami, Bogota, Seoul, Tokyo), as well as to the most important festivals such as B. Festival d'Automne Paris, Festival (Vilar) d'Avignon , or Festival dei due Mondi in Spoleto.
From 1971 to 2002 he was a professor at what is now the University of the Arts in Berlin , studying stage costume, class Rupprecht. In addition to his work as a set designer, he experimented for many years with scriptural images and free painting, in a broad field of image, drawing and collage. Rupprecht lived and worked in Berlin and Buchholz / Zernikow, Brandenburg.
Costume and stage design
"The stage and costume designer Martin Rupprecht is considered to be“ one of the leading outfitters in the German-speaking region, whose 'art of atmospheric concentration', rich in variety, opulent and ironic, breaks conventional viewing habits and sets strong visual accents ”( Rowohlt Theater Lexicon). The encounter with Ita Maximowna shaped his beginnings, as did his years with Winfried Bauernfeind at the Deutsche Oper , Berlin, and later the collaboration with Hans Werner Henze and Mauricio Kagel .
In the mid-1970s he made his breakthrough in the field of contemporary music theater. Kagel's production "Mare Nostrum" traveled around the world with its equipment. With his imaginative stage designs he has set standards at the leading opera houses. "In addition to classical operas , he has worked as a congenial partner of directors such as Mauricio Kagel , Winfried Bauernfeind and Michael Hampe in the New Music Theater in particular . He brought numerous works by Kagel , Henri Pousseur , Hans Werner Henze and Wilhelm Dieter Siebert to the original or First performance. "
A part of Martin Rupprecht's personal archive has been in the Theater Studies Collection at the University of Cologne since 2016 and a part in the archive of the Academy of Arts .

In his free work, "Martin Rupprecht has been experimenting with scriptural images and free painting for years, in a broad field of image, drawing and collage." "In addition to his work on the stage and costume, the field of free thought images, in which Rupprecht walks enthusiastically and ready to jump, is far from any pathos. In recent years more than ever." (Christoph Tannert)

“In addition to the singular, the principle of compression and visual correspondence reigns. Rupprecht transforms years of theater experience into painterly and graphic delight and moves from space to surface in an offensive dynamic of transformation. Since about 1992, richly painted or sampled illustrative material from the cities and signals of the heart have been created, an astonishing visual pleasure. "

"Rupprecht's exhibition" Unrest of the Line. Collages and Drawings "is an overflowing bundling of symbols - an uninterrupted flow of abbreviations, notations, word fragments, strikeouts, overpaintings and, as a counterpart, large-scale accentuations of form."
