Wilhelm Dieter Siebert

Wilhelm Dieter Siebert (born October 22, 1931 in Berlin ; † April 19, 2011 there ) was a German composer . In 1965, together with colleagues Gerald Humel , Karl Heinz Wahren , Roland Pfrengle and Jolyon Brettingham-Smith, he founded the group Neue Musik Berlin, which has been successful for decades . The opera Untergang der Titanic, premiered in 1979 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, is one of the most famous works .

Career

Siebert lived in Berlin and Greece. He studied clarinet, composition, instrumentation and conducting at the conservatory and the music academy in Berlin. In the late 1950s he played jazz . He took twelve-tone music courses with Josef Rufer , then composition with Wolfgang Fortner in Freiburg im Breisgau . He experimented with jazz and electronics.

Works (selection)

Siebert's works include operas, musicals, ballets, chamber music, songs, orchestral pieces and experimental musical theater pieces with performances in Germany, the Netherlands, England, Italy, Greece, France, the USA, Japan and Korea. Severt's best-known work, the opera "Untergang der Titanic" (Direction: Winfried Bauernfeind ) premiered at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 1979 , remained on the program for 7 years. Further productions in Los Angeles , Rennes , Freiburg, Cottbus , Plauen , Halle and Greifswald . The signature melody of 100 or 1000 masterpieces is known to a wide audience .
