1000 masterpieces (originally 100 masterpieces from the great museums of the world ) is the title of a television series produced under the responsibility of the WDR , which was broadcast on German television , ORF and Bavarian television from 1981 to 1994 . In each of the ten-minute broadcasts, a painting was presented and analyzed by art historians . The broadcasts on Sunday evening had five million viewers.

100 great paintings

Edwin Mullins developed the series 100 Great Paintings for the BBC 2 , in which he appeared as an author and speaker. Mullins chose five paintings each from 20 thematic groups (such as war, adoration, the language of color, hunting, bathing, ...). The selection ranges from China in the 12th century to the 1950s with a focus on European painting. He deliberately did not choose the "largest" ones and left out particularly well-known ones such as the Mona Lisa or John Constables The Hay Wagon . The series is available on 20 video cassettes or DVDs .

Great Paintings

In 1981, Mullins published the book Great Paintings: Fifty Masterpieces, Explored, Explained and Appreciated on the basis of the series , which included half of the thematic groups (see the literature section ).

From 100 to 1000

The visual arts editor Wibke von Bonin developed the German version of the series for WDR . The series was produced by RM Arts, directed by Reiner E. Moritz , the speaker was Rudolf Jürgen Bartsch , the cameraman was Konrad Kotowski and the concise theme was composed by Wilhelm Dieter Siebert .

In each episode, one painting is shown and discussed, while other paintings by the artist and other artists are used for comparison.

The German or English version was shown in West Germany, the USA , England , the Netherlands , South Africa , Austria , Scandinavia and Japan .

In 1983 the German translation of Mullins' book appeared as 100 masterpieces . In 1985 a second volume was published only in Germany, dealing with the 50 missing paintings (see section Literature ). The texts of the books and the television series are largely the same.

After the completion of the original series, it was only continued in Germany under the title 1000 Masterpieces . The concept was changed in such a way that instead of subject groups, several images from the same museum were grouped into a series of broadcasts. The focus was initially on German museums, while European museums and individual international ones were also taken into account. Painters who already appeared in the 100 masterpieces were initially not taken into account. In many cases, the authors of the contributions are the custodians responsible for the respective image . Occasionally the rigid framework of the series was deviated from, for example several paintings were dealt with in one broadcast in the "Greece Cycle" and the painter Konrad Klapheck wrote the contribution for his own picture, but used the third person.

In 1986 von Bonin received the Golden Camera for this work and video cassettes were published for seven German museums (see section on literature ).

In 1987 and 1988 two more book volumes with the first 100 of the 1000 masterpieces were published. In 1994 the series ended with about 270 episodes without even approaching the number of 1000 episodes.

In 2004 a single episode was produced about Werner Tübke . Today the series is shown sporadically on 3sat , ZDFkultur , BR-alpha and Classica . From 2009 to 2014 Arthaus Musik GmbH and the ZDFtheaterkanal released 40 DVD editions on 42 DVDs. These are arranged in a new arrangement according to styles , museums or topics. Individual paintings have been included on more than one DVD. In addition, a Blu-ray with 30 articles has also been published (see section Literature ).

New edition

ORF III started a new edition of the series on March 7, 2016 in cooperation with the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna under the title 100 Masterpieces , which will be broadcast from Monday to Friday at 7:40 p.m. Writers Michael Köhlmeier and Sabine Haag , General Director of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, present the highlights of the museum's collections. The 50 five-minute short episodes of the first season are each dedicated to one exhibit. The works of art presented include the Saliera by Benvenuto Cellini , the coronation mantle , the imperial crown , the imperial carriage , The Painting by Jan Vermeer , the Rosary Madonna by Caravaggio , the Gemma Augustea and The Hunters in the Snow by Pieter Bruegel the Elder .

In 2018 there was a new edition of the program "1000 Masterpieces presented by Friedrich Liechtenstein", which was created in cooperation with the channel UHD1 by HD + and TELE 5 HD. The works of art were re-filmed in high quality for this production. Friedrich Liechtenstein spoke the text of five masterpieces anew.

Parodies

Stenkelfeld

The comedy series Stenkelfeld parodied the 100 masterpieces several times. The titles of the episodes were, for example: The wedding newspaper , The tablecloth , German authorities' desk and German caravan .

monitor

Monitor magazine created an article about a photo of then Chancellor Gerhard Schröder under the title 1000 Masterpieces .

Special edition "The test picture"

In 1994, ORF produced an edition with the title Das Testbild as part of the regular series of 1000 masterpieces . With pronounced irony, she turned TV test pictures into her subject: "In front of pictures like this one, museum visitors often find themselves at a loss, and some people will quietly have wondered whether they are really dealing with art here."

The election posters of Merkel and Steinmeier

The SWR sent on September 10, 2009 article titled 1000 Masterpieces - Today: The election posters of Merkel and Steinmeier.

Featured works

Note: The names of the paintings are as given in the book that accompanies the series, i.e. in the old spelling. The list includes most of the featured works.
