The café terrace in the evening (French: Terrasse du café le soir or Café Terrace on the Place du Forum) is a painting by Vincent van Gogh that he painted in Arles , France in September 1888 . The painting is painted with oil paints on a sheet and measures 81 × 65.5 cm. Today it hangs in the Kröller-Müller Museum , Otterlo ( Netherlands ).
Drawn by van Gogh's impressions of southern France, a completely new image emerges. For example, he uses a perspective that is unusual for him. It is the first of many with a starry sky in the background. The starry sky motif appears, for example, in the Starry Night above the Rhone (French: Nuit étoilée sur le Rhône ), which was also painted in September 1888, and in the Starry Night (French: Nuit étoilée ) from June 1889 .
The café terrace in the evening should not be confused with Van Gogh's painting The Night Café (French: le café de nuit ).
The café on Place du Forum in Arles shown in the photo was rebuilt in the 1990s to exactly match the view of van Gogh's picture.
