Harriet Backer

Harriet Backer (born January 21, 1845 in Holmestrand , † March 25, 1932 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian painter . She was a pioneer among female artists in Scandinavia and Europe.

Her father came from the Netherlands and was a consul, ship owner and timber merchant, and he also ran a small farm shop ( Norwegian bond trade ). Her mother was from the Smith-Pettersen family from Grimstad. At the age of 12 she moved with her family to Christiania (now Oslo). She learned drawing and painting from Jacob Calmeyer and Johan Fredrik Eckersberg . She traveled a lot with her sister, the pianist Agathe Backer Grøndahl , through Europe and studied in Paris and Munich . She was strongly influenced by Impressionism , although her artistic work is more characterized by realism . But she did not belong to any painting school. She was more inspired by her painter friend Eilif Peterssen .
