Norsk kunstnerleksikon ( Norwegian Norwegian Artist Lexicon) is a scientific lexicon about visual artists, architects and craftsmen and the like in Norway .

History and description

The encyclopedia was published as a book edition from 1950 to 1999 by the Norwegian Universitetsforlaget AS (university publisher). Universitetsforlaget is a Norwegian publisher that usually publishes scientific and academic specialist literature in the form of books and magazines. The National Museum Oslo ( Nasjonalgalleriet ) had the editorial responsibility for the Norsk Kunstnerleksikon with the participation of the national monument protection authority Riksantikvaren . The complete work was published in a print edition with a total of four volumes. Volume I appeared in 1982 and Volume II in 1983; Volumes III and IV were published in 1986. The rights and licenses of the work are owned by Nasjonalgalleriet (Norwegian National Gallery of the National Museum Oslo), and the digitized editions of Volume I and Volume II are owned by Foreningen Store norske leksikon AS (Association of the Great Norwegian Lexicon). In 2013 this association was renamed first under the name Store norske leksikon A / S and then in Norsk nettleksikon (Norwegian network lexicon ). In 2014, the company was converted into a non-profit association with the current name Foreningen Store norske leksikon . In addition to the Norsk kunstnerleksikon , the store norske leksikon , Norsk biografisk leksikon and the store medisinske leksikon are jointly managed under the umbrella of the association .

content

The aim of the publication of the artist lexicon is to publish all important information about Norwegian artists from the time of the Reformation to the present day in a comprehensive encyclopedia. The lexicon includes biographies of well-known Norwegian painters, draftsmen, blacksmiths, sculptors, carvers, graphic artists and illustrators, textile artists, folk artists, and many other personalities and creators from the field of art and culture are represented. A very large part of the lexicon is mainly devoted to the biographies of Norwegian sculptors, jewelers, architects, craftsmen, textile craftsmen and various landscape, exterior and interior architects and designers.

Architects

The encyclopedia provides a comprehensive overview of all the major Norwegian architects. The Norwegian monument protection authority Riksantikvaren was instrumental in recording these artists, especially for the period up to around 1940. The Riksantikvaren authority is therefore responsible for this part of the lexicon. Furthermore, it is the task of collecting and comparing all the data relating to who z. B. worked as an architect in Norway around 1850 until World War II and how he specialized. The Nasjonalmuseet for kunst, arkitektur og design (National Museum for Art, Architecture and Design) takes responsibility for architects who were only active after 1940 . With the support of the NAL library of the Norske arkitekters landsforbund (library of the Norwegian Chamber of Architects), all data are recorded and collected and then corresponding articles are written. A committee appointed for this purpose from the board of directors of the Norwegian Museum of Architecture is responsible for advising and for the strict selection of the most important, best-known and most active Norwegian architects and personalities from the architectural history of Norway who are to be included in this encyclopedia.

digitalization

Since the beginning of the 1990s, attempts have been made to translate the content of the Norwegian artists' dictionary into SGML- standardized formats. A future possible general digital accessibility was considered in advance. This work has not yet been completed. In 2007, the Norwegian National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo began to publish all existing materials in a specially created project for the artists' lexicon in an online version. The Norwegian government agency ABM-utvikling (Statens samordnings- og utviklingsorgan for arkiv, bibliotek og museum - State coordination and registration office for archives, libraries and museums), which was later merged with the Norsk kulturråd (Norwegian Cultural Council), joined and is another permanent partner in the project. The National Museum is currently still mainly involved in the preparation, data acquisition and compilation of the content before it can be published online after professional examination. The online publications began in October 2013 on the web platform of the Association Store norske leksikon AS with volumes 1 and 2 (AM). In 2012, the Norsk Kunstnerleksikon began to scan the book editions and then make them digitally available to the general public. The systematic digitization of the collections is currently being carried out and supported by the Nasjonalbiblioteket . The books are first scanned there as image files and then the texts are digitized and published. The text can then also be further searched using internal search engines on the website of the National Library of Norway.
