John Laurens (born October 28, 1754 in Charleston , Province of South Carolina , † August 27, 1782 in Beaufort , South Carolina ) was an American soldier from South Carolina who fought in the Revolutionary War. He is best known for his criticism of slavery and his efforts to recruit slaves and let them fight for their freedom as US soldiers.

Life

John Laurens was born in Charleston to Henry Laurens and Eleanor Ball. In 1779 he received the approval of the Continental Congress to recruit a brigade of 3,000 slaves and to promise freedom to the members of the brigade. In August 1782 he fell in the Battle of the Combahee River .

According to him, Laurens County named in Georgia.

Laurens had frequent correspondence with Alexander Hamilton . The letters show that the two had a very close relationship, many believe that they were romantic. However, this has not been confirmed.
