Carl W. Schnitler

Carl Wille Schnitler (born June 24, 1879 in Brandval , Hedmark , † October 28, 1926 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian art historian .

Carl Schnitler, son of pastor Hans Peter Schnitler (1836-1894) and his wife Marine Sophie Petrea Wille (1848-1919), graduated from the Oslo Cathedral School in 1896 (Oslo katedralskole). He then attended the University of Oslo , graduated in 1904 as a philologist , received a scholarship and studied art history with Lorentz Dietrichson . From 1906 to 1916 he was an art critic for the newspaper Aftenposten . He then taught art history at various schools in Oslo. After Dietrichson's death in 1918 Schnitler became a lecturer at his chair for art history at the University of Oslo. In 1921 Schnitler was appointed professor there. He wrote entries on Norwegian artists for Thieme-Becker .

Carl Schnitler married Elisabeth Konow Bruenech (1898–1994) in 1926 and died a few weeks later after an operation.
