Uwe M. Schneede (born January 3, 1939 in Neumünster ) is a German art historian and curator for contemporary art . From 1991 to 2006 he was director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle .

life and work

Uwe M. Schneede studied art history , literary studies and classical archeology at the University of Kiel and the University of Munich . In 1965 he was with the work The representative of society in the Dutch painting of the 17th century and its foundations at Hans Vredeman de Vries at the University of Kiel doctorate . In 1968 he married the art historian Marina Schneede .

Beginning in 1967 he was a research assistant at the newly founded Kunsthalle Düsseldorf for a year and a half , followed by the management of the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart from 1968 to 1973 . From 1973 to 1984 Schneede headed the art association in Hamburg . In Stuttgart (1973) as well as in Hamburg (1977) he founded a municipal cinema with others and was a member of the board of these institutions for several years.

From 1985 to 1990 he was Professor of Art History with a focus on the 20th Century at the Art History Department of the University of Munich. In 1991 he took up his post as director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle. During his term of office, the new building and establishment of the “Galerie der Gegenwart”, designed by Oswald Mathias Ungers , opened in 1997. He has also written and edited a number of books on art and art history. From 1994 he was part-time professor for art history at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts . He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Hanne Darboven Foundation . In 2009, Schneede was awarded the Federal Republic of Germany's Cross of Merit on Ribbon . He lives and works in Hamburg .

Schneede was curator of the following exhibitions: “The most beautiful museum in the world” at the Museum Folkwang Essen 2010, “Gerhard Richter. Pictures of an Era "in the Bucerius Kunst Forum Hamburg 2011," 1914. The Avant-Garde in Struggle ”in the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn 2013.

From 2008 to 2014 he was chairman of the advisory board of the office for provenance research in Berlin, from 2015 to 2017 chairman of the Foundation German Center for Cultural Property Losses in Magdeburg.
