Hermann Wiesler (born February 27, 1932 in Dortmund ; † November 21, 1999 with Apolda ) was a German art sociologist .

Life

Wiesler was professor of art sociology at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1975 to 1997 (today: Berlin University of the Arts ). At the same time, he taught at the Free University of Berlin at the Otto Suhr Institute until 1999. Wiesler was an extraordinary member of the German Association of Artists and a founding member and board member of the New Berlin Art Association. He accompanied the work of artists, often from the University of the Arts (UdK), with introductory speeches at vernissages and catalog texts. In 1996 he curated the anniversary exhibition "Academy Academy" for the 300th anniversary of the Academy of the Arts and the University of the Arts at the UdK site on Hardenbergplatz and edited the accompanying volume of the same name. Wiesler's several hundred square meter old apartment on the Spree in West Berlin (today closed) consisted of a gallery of books and picture walls. Here he ran one of the most famous West Berlin salons, which he served alone, often with Riesling, Wasser, Frankenlaib and Brie, a meeting place for politics, culture and the student world.

"The memory of the collector, patron, critic and enthusiast, the homme de lettres, scholar and humanist," was taken care of as early as 1992 during his lifetime. 35 artists donated a series of graphics to finance the publication of the catalog texts in the collective work "Bilderleben I". After his death, another 43 artists united and donated graphic works for the cassette "Bilderleben II", from whose sale the publication of his literary papers, "Bilderleben II", was financed, a collection of catalog texts. The Bilderleben I cassette is in the collections of the Berlinische Galerie, the Bilderleben II edition in the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett.
