Karl Horst Hödicke

Karl-Horst Hödicke (born February 21, 1938 in Nuremberg ) is a German painter .

He is considered "one of the pioneers of German Neo-Expressionism [...] and one of the most important stimuli of the so-called Neue Wilden and - alongside Baselitz , Immendorff , Lüpertz , Koberling and Penck - as an important representative of the New Figuration ."

Hödicke was born in Nuremberg in 1938, and his family fled with him to Vienna in 1945, where his mother died. In 1957 he moved with his family to Berlin , where he studied architecture at the Technical University of Berlin from 1959 to 1964 , but after just one semester he switched to the Berlin University of the Arts and studied painting with Fred Thieler .

In 1961 he became a member of the Vision group together with Bernd Koberling . In 1964 he founded a. a. with Markus Lüpertz and Bernd Koberling the legendary producer or self-help gallery Großgörschen 35 . For a work in his first exhibition there, he received the German Youth Art Prize for painting. Hödicke stayed in America from 1966 to 1967, where he produced experimental short films, most of which reflect his stay in New York .

In 1968 he received the scholarship for the Villa Massimo . He then devoted himself to plastic experiments, in which he let the buckets or tons of black tar hung on the wall or ceiling flow out ( Kalter Fluß , 1969), which took weeks at room temperature and thus emphasized the process character.

In 1974 he was appointed professor of his own painting class at the Berlin University of the Arts, where he taught until 2005. In his class a. a. Helmut Middendorf , Barbara Heinisch , Salomé , Cheng Yuzheng and Jan Muche . Since 1980 he has been a full member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts . In 1983 he received the German Critics' Prize and in 1998 the Fred Thieler Prize for Painting from the Berlinische Galerie .

Karl Horst Hödicke was a member of the German Association of Artists . He lives and works in Berlin.
