Salomé (* 24. August 1954 in Karlsruhe as Wolfgang Ludwig Cihlarz ) is a German artist.

Life

Wolfgang Ludwig Cihlarz grew up in Karlsruhe and completed an apprenticeship as a draftsman . In 1973 he moved to West Berlin .

There he initially worked as a draftsman for the US armed forces in Tempelhof and at DeTeWe . After passing the entrance examination, he studied at the University of the Arts (UdK): from 1974 to 1980 painting with Ulrich Knispel , later as a master student with Karl Horst Hödicke . In addition to his studies, he worked as a waiter in the clubs "Matalla" and "Dschungel" as well as in the café "Anderes Ufer". He met its owner, Gerhard Hoffmann, in 1973 in the homosexual campaign in West Berlin . Hoffmann invented the pseudonym Salomé in 1973 . In the “Other Shore” Salomé a. a. Know David Bowie , who was living in Berlin at the time. During this phase Salomé was in a relationship with Rainer Fetting .

In 1977 Salomé founded the “ Galerie am Moritzplatz ” together with his artist colleagues Helmut Middendorf , Bernd Zimmer , Rainer Fetting , Anne Jud , Berthold Schepers , Rolf von Bergmann and others . Later guests / members were added such as B. Hella Santarossa and Luciano Castelli . With Castelli he founded the punk band Geile Tiere (New Wave) in 1980 , which had its origins in the “ Dschungel ” dance club and also performed live there in the 1980s. He presented himself in films and radio plays with unusual performances .

In 1980 Salomé was invited to the exhibition “Heftige Malerei” at the Haus am Waldsee in Berlin . In the same year the exhibition “Les Nouveaux Fauves - The New Wilds” followed in Aachen . Also in 1980 he played the painter in Lessing's drama Emilia Galotti at the Freie Volksbühne Berlin and tore up pictures he had painted himself - as directed by the director. In 1981 he was represented in the show " Rundschau Deutschland ". Together with painters such as Rainer Fetting , Helmut Middendorf, Bernd Zimmer, Elvira Bach , Luciano Castelli and Jiří Georg Dokoupil , Salomé became known as a representative of the Neue Wilde and also the Junge Wilde . At the invitation of Rudi Fuchs , he took part in the art fair " documenta 7" in Kassel in 1982 , which ultimately brought him his international breakthrough.

Salomé began a commuter life between New York and Berlin. He portrayed numerous VIPs such as B. Fürstin Gloria von Thurn und Taxis and he is also portrayed by famous photographers like Helmut Newton himself. After a long stay in America, he returned to Berlin in 1999 and reactivated his studio in the rooms of the former gallery on Moritzplatz . Through the cooperation with well-known porcelain manufacturers, u. a. Rosenthal , painted sculptures and table settings were created. Today Salomé's paintings hang in museums and private collections around the world. The most famous cycles include the colorful swimmers and water lilies . There are also series with neutral celebrity portraits and explicitly gay topics. He recently started publishing his own punk music CDs again and occasionally appeared as a singer. He is regularly involved in charity projects.

Salomé lives and works in Berlin.
