Ator II - The Invincible is after Ator - Lord of Fire the second of three films with the title hero Ator, which the Italian director , screenwriter and cinematographer Joe D'Amato made after the success of Conan the Barbarian , with his considerably less elaborate works to benefit from the popularity of the new genre of barbarian films.

Story of the movie

In an unspecified prehistory , the sage Akronnos discovered atomic energy in the form of the radiant . Fearing that this discovery could have terrible consequences in the wrong hands, he instructs his daughter Mila to fetch his former student Ator, to whom he wants to entrust the discovery to protect against unauthorized persons. Zoran, another former student of Akronnos who had fallen for power, has learned of the invention and now brings his former teacher into his power to force the surrender of the shining light. In the meantime, Mila has notified Ator and his companions, Thong, and they are on their way to Akronnos' castle. On the way there are various obstacles in their way, such as aggressive invisible people who are defeated in battle, a tribe of human sacrifices cavemen who almost sacrifice Mila, and a cruel serpent cult that destroyed Ator. Ator, Mila and Thong arrive at Akronnos' castle and gain entry. Ator defeats Zoran in a duel, and after the radiant has been rendered harmless, Ator goes out into the world with Akronnos' mission to assist the oppressed everywhere.

meaning

Ator the Invincible is widely considered to be one of the worst commercially produced films ever. This assessment is based on several aspects. At first it is consistently obvious that the film was produced with very little financial expenditure. One and the same cave must clearly represent the home of the cavemen, Akronnos' laboratory and Ator's abode. Instead of costly own film recordings, unsuitable archive recordings were clumsily cut together in some places (for example the aerial photo of Hohenschwangau Castle , including the unmistakable Bavarian flag on the highest tower). The fact that only very limited funds were available can also be seen from other details; for example, the dreaded serpent cult consists of just under a dozen horsemen, the high priest and his two assistants. The plot doesn't make sense in parts, which also applies to a number of dialogues . The uncharismatic actors also contribute significantly to the negative overall impression . Nevertheless, Ator the invincible is often ascribed a great entertainment value, since the extremely cheap, incompetent design and the many senseless plot elements have an unintentional comic effect. Precisely because this film was completely unsuccessful in terms of craftsmanship, dramaturgical and acting, it has achieved a high level of awareness among film buffs . Ator the Invincible belongs to the category of unintentionally funny B-films . On September 23, 2016 this film was shown on Tele 5 as part of the " Schlefaz - The worst films of all time " series.

Trivia

  • As director d'Amato announced in an interview, after Ator - Lord of the Fire , a second part was filmed mainly to use the contract that existed with Miles O'Keeffe. In contrast to the first part, Ator the Invincible was therefore filmed in a great hurry and almost entirely without a script.
  • As D'Amato revealed in another interview with the Italian fanzine “Nocturno”, Miles O'Keeffe had problems at the beginning of the shooting: "Everything was ready for shooting, yes we had started rehearsing two days ago when Miles refused to take part in the project because of problems of a religious nature. He was obsessed with religion. One night we stayed up until four in the morning with Miles, who was sitting on the stairs in front of the office crying. His psyche was a little unstable, poor man ... " (In German translation from Italian).
  • The film premiered in Spain on December 16, 1982. It was released in German cinemas on February 24, 1984.
