Naked among cannibals (original title: Emanuelle e gli ultimi cannibali , alternatively Emanuelle and the last cannibals ) is an Italian sexploitation film directed by Joe D'Amato in 1977 . The reporter Emanuelle is on a secret mission in a psychiatric institution , where a cannibal attack by a patient on a nurse occurs. The inmate, a white woman raised by South American natives, wears a strange symbol on her body that, according to an ethnologist, is the mark of an allegedly extinct cannibal tribe. Emanuelle senses a story. She meets with the anthropologist Mark Lester, with whom she then travels to the Amazon rainforest on an expedition to get to the bottom of the matter.
Once in the jungle, they visit Mark's friend Wilkes and his daughter Isabelle, who are also visited by the nun Angela. Together with Isabelle, who wants to deliver supplies for a remote mission , the two, accompanied by helpers Philippe and Manolo, as well as the nun, take a boat along the Amazon into the unknown.
During a rest make friends, which is Emanuelle now entered into a relationship with Mark, and Isabelle above average and while smoking from a cigarette are chimpanzees (obviously there is home) covered . Later the community meets the hunter Donald McKenzie, who can save Emanuelle from a strangler snake by shooting it off her neck. They also learn from him that the mission was attacked and destroyed by savages. In the hunter's camp, they meet his wife Maggie McKenzie, who cheats on her husband at night with his colleague Salvadore. The next morning they discover that Philippe was slaughtered and that their boat was stolen. With no other choice, they make their way through the thicket, along the river.
During the torture tour, the nun Angela disappears and is tormented, gutted and eaten in a bloody spectacle . Manolo dies in a trap. Meanwhile, the McKenzies find what they actually came to the jungle for - a crashed small plane with two sacks of diamonds, which excites them very much. When making love, they are attacked by cannibals, who wound Donald and kidnap Maggie, whom they want to sacrifice for their water goddess in a fertility ritual. The remaining adventurers pursue the savages to their village and want to attack it from two sides. Donald, Isabelle and Salvadore on one side, Emanuelle and Mark on the other. However, things go wrong. Salvadore dies, Maggie is eaten and Donald is split in two with a rope. Isabelle is mounted by the tribal warriors and is said to be impregnated, on the banks of the Amazon, also to be sacrificed.
Emanuelle gets a saving idea: she paints the cannibal symbol on her stomach and emerges from the river in front of the cannibals as a naked water goddess, accompanied by a loud bang from Mark's flare gun . The wild ones let themselves be fooled, whereupon the "beautiful black" takes Isabelle by the hand and leads them into the water. They quickly swim back to the recovered boat. When the cannibals notice the vertigo, they pursue the three fleeing. Without finding time to dress, Emanuelle picks up a rifle with which she shoots some of the natives. The boat's engine can finally be started and the escaped begin to weigh themselves in safety, when suddenly the chief, who had clung to the boat, appears, but can be taken down by Emanuelle with one paddle stroke . In view of the fatal outcome of this excursion, Emanuelle begins to doubt her professionalism, but Mark reassures her with the words: "It's not our fault!"

In 1977 the cannibal film experienced an upswing. D'Amato, who did not see his films as art, wanted to participate in this profitable business and combined the erotic scenes from the Emanuelle films with gore effects from cannibal films, but the cannibals are given a rather limited space. Most of the time, sex scenes dominate . In the theatrical version these remain largely in the area of softcore .
In 1980, Naked Among Cannibals was first evaluated for home cinema. The German distributor piccolo-film released a 2 × 110 m version, which had a total playing time of approx. 33 minutes. This version only focuses on the topic of cannibalism. So the version begins in psychiatry as well as researching and getting to know the professor in New York, in order to show the chugging of the dinghy on the Amazon after about 5 minutes. The rest of this version almost corresponds to the ending of the original film. The sex scenes were completely removed in the Super8 version.
A version that has meanwhile been released on DVD is approx. 18 minutes longer than the theatrical version, but also contains extensive hardcore scenes. Nevertheless, Naked among cannibals was a great international success, so that the figure of Emanuelle was allowed to experience adventures for more years. Contrary to many claims, the 5th part of the series was not filmed in the Amazon, but in Italy. The Amazon cannibals were represented in part by paid tourists from Asia. Some of the scenes in New York were shot in parallel with other Black Emanuelle films. As in some parts of the series, there is a scene in a gondola over the Hudson River in which Laura Gemser and her husband and fellow actor Gabriele Tinti always wear the same outfit. The same applies to the psychiatric institution, the location of which appears again as a hospital in another film in the series. Only action and dialogue differ. In Germany, Nackt unter Kannibalen has already been cut for theatrical release. It was also released on video in this version. That did not help, however, and naked cannibals were indexed. To this day, however, there are versions that are still freely available for sale. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, Astro brought an almost unedited publication on the market with the aim of gaining approval (i.e. “criminally harmless” by the JK ( Legal Commission ) of the SPIO ). However, the JK demanded a cut run of 0.5 seconds. The film was finally released without approval and then confiscated nationwide by the Berlin-Tiergarten district court. The motives can mainly be found in the few scenes with cannibalism. In the Netherlands and Australia , Naked Among Cannibals was also only published in abridged version. A completely uncensored version appeared recently, with scenes that have never been shown before. Because of this, old issues should not be viewed as completely unabridged.

Naked among cannibals had its Italian premiere on October 21, 1977 and was released in the Federal Republic of Germany on December 22, 1978. In 1980 the film was released on video cassette .

But the question here is: is the film suitable for a party? Yes, if there are no women present - the film is definitely enough for a gentlemen's evening! "
