history

The house at Waldsee at Argentinische Allee 30 was built in 1922/1923 for the manufacturer Hermann Knobloch as a private villa based on designs by the architect Max Werner . The villa was sold as early as 1926 and then changed hands several times until the Allgemeine Film-Treuhand (AFT) of UFA acquired the property in 1942 . The villa was then used as the official residence of Karl Melzer , Secretary General of the International Film Chamber and Deputy President of the Reich Film Chamber . In 1945 a registration office of the district office for artists residing in Zehlendorf was set up in the house. The house was officially opened as an exhibition location on January 6, 1946 with an exhibition of works by Käthe Kollwitz and Ewald Vetter . In the first few years mainly artists were shown whose works were considered "degenerate" during the Nazi era . Exhibitions with renowned contemporary artists followed. With this exhibition activity, the Haus am Waldsee gained an international reputation as an exhibition venue for international contemporary art.

Until 1972, the then district of Zehlendorf received the financing. From 1973 to 1985 the institution was under budgetary law directly to the Berlin Senator for Finance. The exhibition house is now the responsibility of a non-profit sponsoring association and is supported by the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district of Berlin with an annual donation. All exhibition projects are financed from "third-party funds" raised through fundraising . The Association of Friends and Patrons of Haus am Waldsee e. V. , which had over 600 members in 2012.
