Karl Hartung (born May 2, 1908 in Hamburg , † July 19, 1967 in Berlin ) was a German sculptor . His works can be assigned to abstract art . From 1955 to 1967 Hartung was chairman of the German Association of Artists .

life and work

After completing his apprenticeship as a wood sculptor, Hartung studied at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg and continued his studies in Paris from 1929 to 1932 . His role models at that time included the artists Antoine Bourdelle , Charles Despiau and Aristide Maillol . In Florence in 1932 and 1933 he dealt intensively with the works of Donatello and the sculptures of the Etruscans . After his return to Hamburg in 1935, his previously object-oriented art moved closer to the abstract forms of the art of Constantin Brâncuși , Alexander Archipenko and Hans Arp .

Max Sauerlandt from the Hamburg Museum of Art and Crafts and the Hamburg art scene of the 1920s and 1930s gave him ideas for his path. Hartung managed to gain recognition after the restrictions imposed by the National Socialist "cultural policy" in the post-war period. With their curves, some of his sculptures are reminiscent of works by Richard Haizmann and Henry Moore .

In 1951, Hartung was appointed professor of sculpture at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin . He took part in documenta 1 (1955), documenta II (1959) and documenta III (1964) in Kassel . 1956 Hartung's large spherical shape was set up in Hanover . It was not only the first abstract art in public space in Hanover in the course of the reconstruction , but “probably in Germany at all”.

Karl Hartung was buried in the Zehlendorf forest cemetery in Berlin-Nikolassee . The grave is one of the honor graves of the State of Berlin .
