The large spherical shape by the sculptor Karl Hartung in Hanover is considered to be one of the first abstract sculptures in Germany to be set up as art in public space in the course of the reconstruction . In agreement with the artist, the sculpture was dedicated to the divided Germany and symbolizes the desire for reunification at the time . The location of the 189 cm high sculpture made of shell limestone is today on the corner of Friedrichswall and Georgswall near Aegidientorplatz .

history

Karl Hartung designed the large spherical shape as early as 1950, but it was first shown "in 1956 during an exhibition in front of the Berlin pavilion on the exhibition grounds [in Hanover]". After the purchase by the city of Hanover, the figure was initially set up in front of the Werner-von-Siemens Hanover secondary school , which was newly built at the time, on Welfenplatz . The sculpture was not only the first abstract in public space after the reconstruction in Hanover, but “probably in Germany at all”.

When, towards the end of the 1950s, the desire, “especially among young people, for a symbol for divided Germany” became more and more urgent, the city looked for a suitable solution. However, the possibilities of the Eternal Fires , which were often chosen at the time and have almost become routine , found no favor. In consultation with Karl Hartung, the large shell shape was rededicated as a simple but convincing symbol for the division of Germany and placed in a much more popular place in 1959 on Aegidientorplatz. In addition, a stone slab with the promise of the Germans was placed in front of the figure :
