The Cardinal Brewery
Little cardinal

Cardinal was the name of a Swiss brewery in Freiburg in the Üechtland .

history

It was founded in 1788 by the innkeeper François Piller for his son, who had recently completed his training with a Bavarian master brewer. After the death of the father, the son moved to La Neuveville and the business changed hands several times until 1877. After that, Paul-Alcide Blancpain , who came from a family of watchmakers from the Jura , expanded it into a modern industrial company.

When Pope Leo XIII. On June 23, 1890, Gaspard Mermillod was the first to award a bishop of Freiburg the dignity of cardinal , the Blancpain brewery brought a festival beer to the market for the occasion, the Cardinal. This product was so successful that Paul Blancpain decided to name his brewery Cardinal in the future .

In 1970/71 the Brasserie du Cardinal and the Brasserie Beauregard in Freiburg, Salmenbräu in Rheinfelden AG , the Brasserie de la Comète in La Chaux-de-Fonds and the Wädenswil brewery merged to form Sibra-Holding. Two years later, the entire holding was named Cardinal .

On October 29, 1996, the Feldschlösschen-Hürlimann-Holding , which had meanwhile acquired the majority of shares in Sibra / Cardinal, announced the closure of the Freiburg brewery. After massive protests by the Freiburg population and a campaign by the daily newspaper La Liberté , the Feldschlösschen-Hürlimann-Holding and the authorities of the city and canton of Freiburg signed an agreement on February 25, 1998, which guarantees the continuation of operations at the Freiburg location.

On August 31, 2010, Feldschlösschen Getränke AG once again announced the closure of the production site in Freiburg for June 2011. The production site for Cardinal beers was relocated to Feldschlösschen in Rheinfelden .

The state and the city of Freiburg took over the factory premises on June 1, 2012 for 21.5 million Swiss francs to build a technology and innovation park there.
