Paul-Alcide Blancpain

Paul-Alcide Blancpain (born March 30, 1839 in Villeret in the Bernese Jura ; † March 22, 1899 in Freiburg in Üechtland ) was a Swiss brewery entrepreneur .

He came from a watchmaking family and in 1857 became co-owner of his parents' watch factory. In 1876 he retired from the company and in 1877 bought a bankrupt brewery in Freiburg.

When Pope Leo XIII. On June 23, 1890, Gaspard Mermillod was the first to give a bishop of Freiburg the dignity of cardinal , the Blancpain brewery launched the Cardinal festival beer on the market. This product was so successful that Paul Blancpain decided to name his brewery Cardinal in the future .

From 1893 until his death, the reformed Blancpain was a member of the FDP on the General Council of the predominantly Roman Catholic city ​​of Freiburg.
