Mateusz Bogucki

Mateusz Bogucki (born April 1, 1973 ) is a Polish medieval archeologist and numismatist .

Career

He studied at the Archaeological Institute of Warsaw University from 1994 to 2005 . In 2000 he wrote his master's thesis on an early medieval silver jewelry treasure from the village of Brodzikowo, Warminsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship near Andrzej Buko. In 2005 he received his doctorate with Andrzej Buko with a dissertation on trade and craft centers in the Baltic zone in the early Middle Ages. Since 2004 he has been working as an archaeologist and numismatist at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnology, Medieval Archeology Department, Academy of Sciences in Warsaw . Bogucki is the project manager for the new inventory of early medieval coin finds in Poland (400–1150). He also turned the previous research opinion that the first Polish kings were only minted for representational purposes, as he was able to prove in numerous individual studies that the kings and possibly also magnates often anonymously imitated Western European models. In October 2015 he completed his habilitation at the University of Warsaw.

Together with Aleksander Bursche , he is organizing the 16th International Numismatic Congress in Warsaw in 2021.

In 2007 he received the "Robinson Visiting studentship" at Wolfson College and Fitzwilliam Museum of Cambridge University . In 2013 was the Visiting Researcher at Aarhus University , Denmark.

Since 2004 he has published numerous articles in numismatic and archaeological journals in Poland and abroad and edited volumes on the beginnings of the use of money in Poland and on the early medieval trading establishments on the Baltic Sea.
