Peter Ilisch

Peter Ilisch (born April 28, 1947 in Billerbeck ) is a German historian and numismatist . His younger brother, also a numismatist, is Lutz Ilisch .

Life

Peter Ilisch studied history , historical auxiliary sciences (with a focus on numismatics ) and folklore at the University of Münster . In 1971 he completed his first degree as a Magister Artium with a thesis on the older agricultural history of the Billerbeck parish . This was followed by a scientific traineeship at the Westphalian State Museum in Münster. In 1974 he did his doctorate under Peter Berghaus on the topic of coin finds and money circulation in Westphalia in the Middle Ages and modern times . Activities at the Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede (Netherlands) and in the editorial team of the Numismatic News Gazette followed. As part of a research project, in 1977/78 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Religious Folklore at the University of Münster.

From 1979 to 2012 Ilisch was a scientific advisor responsible for the coin cabinet and the seal collection at the Westphalian State Museum in Münster . From 1980 to 2014 he was also one of the two representatives of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in the Numismatic Commission of the States in the Federal Republic of Germany . In addition, Peter Ilisch is a full member of the Antiquities Commission for Westphalia and the Historical Commission for Westphalia (since 1998). In succession to Peter Berghaus , Ilisch has a teaching position for numismatics at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. He is also a collaborator in the international project “Medieval European Coinage” at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge . The focus of work is on medieval and early modern numismatics as well as the regional history of the former duchy of Münster . He has published numerous articles on this in Germany and abroad.

From 2012 to 2018 Ilisch was a freelancer at the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), Institute for Archeology and Ethnology, in the project “Early Medieval Coin Finds from Poland”.
