Arnold Schwede (born July 31, 1937 in Königsberg ; † January 9, 2020 in Paderborn ) was a German engineer, numismatist and author. He lived and worked in Paderborn.

Professionally, he worked as a surveyor for road construction in East Westphalia at the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association. He published the numismatic knowledge he acquired as a collector of Paderborn coins in lectures, regional historical journals and monographs.

Since 1983 Swede was a "Münzwart" board member of the Association for History and Archeology of Westphalia, Dept. Paderborn ("Antiquity Association") and in 2000 published its coin collection.

He advised the then Volksbank Paderborn on the addition, publication and exhibition of its coin collection. After his retirement he devoted himself increasingly to scientific numismatics and, supported by the Volksbank on his research trips, initially wrote the coin stories of the Paderborn Monastery (2004) and the Corvey Monastery (2007). This was followed by other basic works on the modern coins of the County of Rietberg , the city of Marsberg and the County of Lippe .

Awards

Arnold Schwede was honored with the Eligius Prize of the German Numismatic Society in 2007 , in particular for his "large corpus work on Paderborn's modern coin and monetary history".
