It was founded in 1824 on the initiative of the cathedral capitular Ignaz Theodor Liborius Meyer . Paul Wigand was also significantly involved in the foundation .
On December 31, 2012, the Paderborn department had 840 members, mainly from the Arnsberg region and the Detmold region .
Together with his sister association, the Association for History and Archeology of Westphalia, Department of Münster , he has been publishing the Westphalian magazine since 1837 .
The association has been awarding the Ignaz Theodor Liborius Meyer Prize annually since 1991, which honors outstanding work by young historians on the regional history of East and South Westphalia.
