Wilhelm Engelbert Giefers (born November 6, 1817 in Brakel ; † November 26, 1880 there ) was a German high school professor , historian and author.

Life

Wilhelm Engelbert Giefers was born on November 6, 1817 as the first child of the roofer and brick maker Franz Anton Giefers in Brakel. As a pupil he attended the Theodorianum in Paderborn , where his uncle Heinrich Gundolf was the high school director and his older brother was a teacher. He began studying in Münster and moved to the University of Bonn. There he received his doctorate in 1847 with a thesis on the Roman fort Aliso . In 1851 he became an assistant teacher in Paderborn. He was appointed full teacher in 1855. In 1874, Giefers ended his teaching career and retired to his native Brakel. He died on November 26, 1880 of complications from a stroke.

Giefers wrote an extensive work of mostly regional historical literature. He was also involved in the Association for the History and Archeology of Westphalia, Dept. Paderborn . From 1855 to 1880 he was its director.

A street in Paderborn was named after him. In his hometown of Brakel, the Giefersweg is a reminder of him.
