Paul Wigand (born August 10, 1786 in Kassel , † January 4, 1866 in Wetzlar ) was a German lawyer and legal historian .

biography

Paul Wigand was born into a family of theologians and pedagogues in Kassel , where he attended the Friedericianum with Wilhelm Grimm, who was of the same age, and from 1803 studied law and history in Marburg . After the early death of his father, he broke off his studies and briefly became editor of the "Kurhessische Zeitung" in Kassel. In 1808 he became a justice of the peace in Höxter .

Actually, he had wanted to devote himself to the legal academic career, but he was blocked from further advancement because he had not passed the third legal exam. In 1815 he was employed in the now Prussian Höxter as an assessor at the regional and municipal court.

Here he penetrated deeper and deeper into the field of archival work and document research until he finally made suggestions to the Prussian Minister of State von Hardenberg for the rescue and storage of endangered document stocks.

As a part-time job, he organized numerous archives in the area around Höxter and evaluated these sources in historical publications. In 1824 Wigand was instrumental in founding the Society for the History and Antiquities of Westphalia . For the Prussian Westphalia , Paul Wigand was the founder of regional historical research , namely in the field of legal and constitutional history .

Wigand was an extremely fruitful writer not only in the scientific field. From the enthusiastic nature poem to the Andreas Hofer drama, he barely left out a genre. He wrote “War songs of the Germans”, a “Handbook for Justice of the Peace”, a “History of the Medieval Vocal Courts of Westphalia” and the guide “Wetzlar and the Lahn Valley”.

Wigand's friendship with Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm , whom he even offered asylum in Wetzlar in 1837 after they were expelled from the University of Göttingen as members of the “ Göttinger Sieben ”, was reflected in an exchange of letters that had been preserved from 1802 onwards. Over four hundred letters were exchanged between the Brothers Grimm and Paul Wigand; the two hundred and twenty-two of the Grimms at Wigand have all survived.

Wigand shared his joy in collecting and documenting with the Grimms throughout his life. So it is not surprising that he contributed to the collection “ Des Knaben Wunderhorn ” about fifty folk songs , which he had the maid in his parents' house in Kassel sang . Wigand cultivated his acquaintance with numerous romantic poets: with the Arnims and Brentanos, with Friedrich Carl von Savigny , ETA Hoffmann and August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben .

As a historian, Wigand kept in touch with kindred spirits; he was a member of eighteen antiquity associations.

In 1833 Wigand took the position of city court director in Wetzlar . In 1834 he founded the “Wetzlar History and Antiquity Association”. Between 1840 and 1851 he edited the "Wetzlar Contributions for History and Legal Antiquities" and in 1854 published the "Memorabilia for German Political Science and Jurisprudence, Collected from the Archives of the Reich Chamber of Commerce in Wetzlar".

As a result of the revolution of 1848, the Wetzlar city court was converted into a larger district court, for whose leadership Wigand was out of the question because he lacked the great state examination. So, at the age of 62, he said goodbye to retire completely to his scholarly office.

Paul Wigand died in Wetzlar in 1866.

Wigand's daughter Pauline (1810-1885) married the lawyer and politician Sylvester Jordan in 1832 .
