Eligius Prize
The Eligius Prize is awarded annually by the German Numismatic Society (DNG) to people who have made a name for themselves in numismatics .
history
The forerunner was a prize for numismatic work donated by Gerd Frese, DNG chairman from 1977 to 1989, when he took office and advertised from 1978 to 1995. Eligible to participate were "non-specialist numismatists at home and abroad who are scientifically and historically documented in the German language for a work from coin and medal science based on their own knowledge as a collector."
The new Eligius Prize is named after St. Eligius , the patron saint of numismatists and coin collectors. In addition to the certificate and prize money, the award has included the "Eligius Medal" since 1982, until 1991 based on a design by the Rhenish sculptor and medalist Hans Karl Burgeff . The medal, which has been awarded since 1992, was designed by the architect and medalist Peter Götz Güttler from Dresden.
In September 1995 a new Eligius statute was passed. German award winners must be members of an association belonging to the DNG; this rule does not apply to foreign award winners. The independent jury is appointed by the President of the DNG; it includes numismatists and coin collectors. In the event of a tie, the vote of the chairman of the jury, also appointed by the president, decides. Albert Raff has chaired the jury since 2013 .
In addition to the Eligius Prize, the German award for numismatic research is the GIG Prize of Honor , awarded annually since 1974 by the Society for International Monetary History in Frankfurt am Main .
