Wolfgang Hahn (Numismatist)

Wolfgang Hahn (born March 12, 1945 in Hermannsreuth) is an Austrian numismatist and was Professor of Numismatics at the University of Vienna from 1990 to 2010 .

Life

In Vienna he studied history, classical philology and numismatics. In 1969 he received his doctorate and in 1980 he completed his habilitation in numismatics and monetary history. From 1971 to 1990 he worked for the Austrian Academy of Sciences on the Byzantine Studies research area. In 1990 he succeeded Robert Göbl Professor at the Institute for Numismatics (since 2000 “Institute for Numismatics and Monetary History”) at the University of Vienna. In 2010 he retired ; Reinhard Wolters was his successor .

In addition to Byzantine numismatics, Hahn's research focuses on numismatics from the 8th to 12th centuries in the greater Bavaria area and the coins from Aksum . Hahn has been a corresponding member of the American Numismatic Society since 1983.
