The German Numismatic Society - Verband der Deutschen Münzvereine eV (DNG), a non-profit association based in Frankfurt am Main , is the umbrella organization of over 70 numismatic associations in the Federal Republic of Germany.

history

The DNG was founded at the German Numismatics Day in Göttingen in 1951 under the name of the Association of West German Coin Associations , and in 1961 it was renamed the Association of German Coin Associations . The first chairman was Karl Kennepohl (1951–1956); he was followed 1956-1965 by Gerhard Goedecke . In 1990, during the term of office of Rainer Albert (1989–1995), the association was given its current name “German Numismatic Society” and a new statute. Barbara Simon has been President since 2016 .

The Numismatic News Gazette has been an association organ since 1952 .

Since 1978, the DNG has awarded the Eligius Prize annually to people who have made a name for themselves in numismatics .

The DNG has 74 member associations (as of 2017).

tasks

According to the statutes, the DNG aims to maintain numismatics and the like. a. by:

  • Promotion of the affiliated associations and their relationships with one another, the numismatic science, relevant work and the next generation of numismatics,
  • Cooperation with the Numismatic Commission of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany , with other numismatic institutions and associations at home and abroad as well as with the coin trade and its representatives,
  • Representing the interests of collectors
  • Organization and support of exhibitions and conferences,
  • Advice on the design of coins and medals,
  • Help with the procurement of numismatic literature, possibly through our own specialist library,
  • Formation and support of numismatic working groups.

Traditionally, this also includes the coordination of national coin collectors' meetings, which are organized by local numismatic associations on behalf of the DNG, e.g. B .:

  • 1st Northwest German Coin Collectors Meeting 1956 in Minden (later: North German Coin Collectors Meeting)
  • 1st South German coin collectors' meeting in Nuremberg in 1966
  • 1. Central German coin collectors meeting in 1993 in Freiberg
  • 14th German and 25th Central German Coin Collectors Meeting 28. – 30. April 2017 in Erfurt
