The Society for International Monetary History (GIG) is a non-profit association based in Frankfurt am Main , which deals with scientific research in the field of monetary history (especially numismatics ) and medals .

history

The GIG was founded in 1965 under the name "Museum für Internationale Geldgeschichte" non-profit research association. V. “founded. Its first president was Willy Fuchs (president 1965–1971 and 1974–1992), followed by Kurt Jaeger from 1971–1974 . Christian Stoess has been President since 1992 .

The GIG has published the Monetary History News since it was founded .

Today (2017) the GIG has around 700 members in 20 countries on five continents.

Since 1974, the GIG has awarded an honorary prize to numismatists and other monetary historians every year . The first prize winner was Peter Berghaus .

tasks

In its articles of association, the GIG u. a. the following statutory purposes and tasks:

  • Promotion of scientific research in all areas of coin, monetary and currency history and medals
  • Issuing of one-off and periodical publications ( monetary history news )
  • Providing information on issues relating to coins, money and medals and the history of means of payment
  • Maintenance of a relevant specialist library and lending for study purposes, maintenance of an archive of documents on the history of coins and money
  • Organization of events (lectures, collectors' meetings, exchange evenings, exhibitions and excursions)
  • Borrowing of teaching and visual material
  • Promote the collection of coins , other currency tokens and medals
