Hans-Jörg Kellner

Hans-Jörg Kellner (born December 3, 1920 in Munich ; † June 25, 2015 there ) was a German provincial Roman archaeologist and numismatist . From 1960 to 1984 he was head of the Prehistoric State Collection in Munich.

Live and act

Kellner did labor and military service , most recently as an officer in World War II , and was then a Soviet prisoner of war for four years . From 1949 he studied philosophy, prehistory and early history , numismatics , epigraphy , historical auxiliary sciences and Bavarian regional history at the University of Munich . During his studies he became a member of the AGV Munich . In 1953 he was the first student to do his doctorate under Joachim Werner with a dissertation on the topic of "The Roman coins found in the northern part of Raetia " . He then worked for the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation .

In 1960 he was appointed head of the Prehistoric State Collection Munich (since 2000 Archaeological State Collection Munich ). The archaeological collections were housed in the building of the Bavarian National Museum until 1975 and had to be rebuilt due to significant war damage. From February 1976 onwards, Hans-Jörg Kellner gradually opened the various departments of the new museum in Lerchenfeldstrasse 2 by the English Garden . For decades, Kellner had campaigned for a modern new building to present Bavaria's archaeological finds, which had not been accessible to the public since 1939.

Kellner was in charge of the State Archaeological Museum until 1984. His successor was Hermann Dannheimer , who was deputy director for many years and was replaced by Ludwig Wamser in 1995 . Kellner was a member of the German Archaeological Institute . From 1968 to 1971 he was chairman of the Bavarian Numismatic Society .

Kellner was involved in more than 300 scientific publications, including 17 monographs, mainly on the subjects of Provincial Roman archeology , numismatics and archeology of the Middle East. His depiction “The Romans in Bavaria” , the fourth edition of which appeared in 1995, developed into a standard work . In 1990 he published about the Celtic coin finds from Manching . He initiated the excavation and development of the Terra Sigillata pottery in Westerndorf and Pfaffenhofen , the acquisition, restoration and publication of the famous treasures from Straubing , Weißenburg and Eining as well as numerous Roman military diplomas . He also dealt with the Eastern Anatolian high culture of Urartu , which he presented to a German audience for the first time as part of an exhibition in autumn 1976.

Kellner was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class and on July 11, 1990 with the Bavarian Order of Merit . He was appointed the first honorary professor at the University of Passau . On June 4, 2005, he was awarded the 10th Eligius Prize of the German Numismatic Society at the 2nd German Coin Collectors Meeting in Minden , and on July 6, 2006, the Society for Archeology in Bavaria awarded him honorary membership in a ceremony.

Kellner was married and lived in Munich. His son Stephan (* 1956) is a historian and librarian and has been a Bavarica consultant at the Bavarian State Library since 2004 .
