Paul Arnold (numismatist)

Hermann Paul Arnold (born March 2, 1936 in Plauen ) is a German classical archaeologist , ancient historian and numismatist . From 1966 to 2002 he was director of the Münzkabinett of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden .

Life and professional history

Paul Arnold was born in Plauen in 1936 as the son of businessman Ewald Wilhelm Arnold (1892–1964) and his wife Luise Johanna Arnold (1908–1977), née Wiesemann. He first attended the local elementary school , later the elementary school in Leipzig and then the local Thomas high school , which he left with the Abitur in 1954 . Between 1954 and 1958 he studied Classical Archeology and Ancient History at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . In 1962 he submitted a dissertation at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig with the title “Ethnological representations on Roman imperial coins of the imperial era - history of motifs and imperial propaganda”, which was supervised by Robert Heidenreich .

In 1959 Arnold was employed as a research assistant at the Münzkabinett of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, where he was appointed senior assistant in 1965. In the following year he was appointed acting director and in 1968 finally director of the coin cabinet. He held this position until he retired in 2002, a total of 36 years.

From 1986 to 1990 Paul Arnold was President of the FIDEM National Committee of the GDR and FIDEM delegate of the GDR. Between 1991 and 1992 he accompanied the office of the FIDEM delegate of the FRG . From 1991 to 2002 he was a delegate of the Free State of Saxony in the Numismatic Commission of the Federal States in Germany . Between 1992 and 2001 Arnold held the position of FIDEM Vice Delegate of the FRG. From 1992 to 2005 he was Vice President of the German Numismatic Society .

For the summer semester of 1991, Arnold was appointed visiting professor for numismatics at the University of Vienna , which was followed by a teaching position in 1993. In the same year he became a lecturer for numismatics at the chair for ancient history at the Technical University of Dresden . From 1993 to 1994 he took on a teaching position for ancient numismatics at the Institute for Classical Archeology at the University of Leipzig . Between 1995 and 2005 he was a lecturer in numismatics at the historical seminar there. This position was converted into an honorary professorship in 2002 .

Private

Paul Arnold is married to Gina Ulli Barbara Arnold (* 1935), who has a doctorate in art history , a former chief curator and temporarily acting director of the Green Vault of the Dresden State Art Collections. Arnold and his wife live in Dresden . They have two sons.

Awards

In 1976 Arnold received the GDR Art Prize in the collective for designing the permanent exhibition of the Münzkabinett in the Albertinum of the Dresden State Art Collections. Four years later he was awarded the Honorary Prize of the Society for International Monetary History . In 2011, the German Numismatic Society awarded him the Eligius Prize .
