Reiner Cunz (born April 12, 1958 in Marburg ) is a German numismatist .

Reiner Cunz attended the comprehensive school in Kirchhain . After studying history (historical auxiliary sciences), geography (cultural geography), Latin, folklore and pedagogy at the University of Marburg and an activity during his studies for finding coins in the Hessian State Office for Historical Regional Studies, Cunz joined the museum service at the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover in 1984 . The doctorate to Dr. phil. followed in 1994. In 2019, Cunz retired.

With his appointment, Cunz received the duties of the Lower Saxony state numismatist. In this function he was in charge of the Lower Saxony Coin Cabinet of the Deutsche Bank in Hanover, which was formed from the former royal collection of the Welfenhaus, which was deposed by Prussia in 1866 , and organized it into a working institute. The Deutsche Bank had protected the collection against migration abroad by purchasing it. It was now run through the country as a joint venture owned by Deutsche Bank under scientific supervision. A traveling exhibition from this coin cabinet entitled Vom Taler zur Mark presented historical forms of money in over 60 locations in the Federal Republic of Germany in the late 1980s and 1990s. When the Deutsche Bank wanted to part with the Münzkabinett as part of the redesign of its cultural work and this appeared to endanger its remaining in Hanover, this became a lively public discussion. Finally, the state of Lower Saxony bought the large collection in order to incorporate it into the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover. The new permanent exhibition A Royal Collection designed by Cunz . The new coin cabinet in the Landesmuseum Hannover was presented to the public on September 3, 2010.

From 1984 to 2019 Cunz was state representative for Lower Saxony in the Numismatic Commission of the States in the Federal Republic of Germany , since 1999 on its board, until 2011 first chairman, since then vice chairman. In 1994 he was one of the co-founders of the International Committee of Money and Banking Museums (ICOMON) in the International Council of Museums (ICOM). He was elected Vice President of ICOMON in Seoul in 2004 and was confirmed for another term in 2007. In addition, Cunz is a full member of the humanities class of the Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft and a member of the Historical Commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen .

Cunz's research focuses on the history of coins and money in the Middle Ages and the modern era , especially the integration of numismatics into structures of general history and museology . Since his dissertation , he has devoted himself to the history of science topics and tasks of science organization. Among other things, Cunz was in charge of the 17th German Numismatics Day in Hanover (1995), which dealt with the history of science in numismatics. Further fields of work concern phenomena of monetary history that transcend epochs and spaces (e.g. currency unions ), the history of technology and museum education . Since 1998 Cunz has been teaching numismatics at the University of Göttingen .

Reiner Cunz was honored with the Eligius Prize of the German Numismatic Society in September 2010 .
